What Color Should You Paint Your Front Door?

What Color Should You Paint Your Front Door?

A front door replacement can take on many forms, from a refurbishment of the door itself, whether through painting or staining or adding decorative additions, the changes can reshape the image of your front doors. Reimagining your entranceway to make it a distinct demonstration of your character and style is one way to enhance your home’s natural beauty. In keeping with upgrades that inflate a home’s value, a simple project like painting your front door will add value and prestige that curb appeal renders to a homeowner. You can avoid a costly front door installation with a simple project to change the front door’s colour, and that changes the attitude with which people view your home.

Design themes

Due to the nature of a front door refurbishment, opinions abound concerning what colours and finishes should be applied. They are as different as the person who let’s their mind’s eye wander down the path of home improvement. There are no hard and fast rules when redesigning your front entranceway, but one thing is certain, the door will reflect the home residents’ personality. Some guideposts to consider along the way include the statement you make when painting your front door. As we mentioned, the character is an essential factor determining a front door’s new colour and how it blends in with the home’s exterior colour scheme.

To dazzle or not to dazzle, that is the question.

Again, this plays into a personality and character. The canvas that is your front door is ripe for design, and you can have many different shades of colour to adorn your home. Colours that have become popular as statements are turquoise, shades of green, orange that runs through to gold or sunburst, and the traditional black door is making a comeback too. The colour spectrum is as vast as the imaginations of the beholder. Don’t let traditional choices limit your options.

Location and climate will drive the selection process.

Geography will influence the colour you select for no other reason than exposure to the culture in the area where you live. Living in Southern Ontario, for example, will see colours that are a little more sedate than, say, South America, where it is all about the brightness and vibrance of the colours applied. Also, architecture has a significant influence on the colour you select. You aren’t going to paint your front door on a traditional Tudor-style home sky blue.

Interior design changes mean different door combinations.

As more and more people see the benefits of adding glass to their front entranceways, glass doors have become a popular choice for many homeowners. Adding a glass cap or a complete glass door with tint is another way to obtain the statement you want to make with your entryway. Suppose your design intentions incorporate a fibreglass door. In that case, it can be finished with many different varieties of colours that make the door look like a wood door. Or, have it bounce with a bright colour as the attraction that your front door becomes when changed. The added benefits of fibreglass abound; they are strong, provide energy-efficiency and are maintenance-free.

Create a new colour

Looking at paint samples is an arduous task when seeking out the right shade of a colour to apply to your door. After frustration has set in, look at creating your own colour to make that personal statement that says so much about your home. Blending and shading different colours to create the one that is just right might be time-consuming, but in the end, it is a rewarding exercise because you have the right colour.

Trends are for followers.

Choosing a colour that equates with what is commercially acceptable is the wrong way to look at your front door project. You subjugate yourself from an expression standpoint, and in the end, you will be unhappy with the results. Once you have come to that conclusion, you will be re-painting the door in a colour that is more satisfying, that makes you happy and wanting to use the front door.
